In a post entitled “The End of Hand Crafted Content“, TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington states that he’s worried about the “rise of cheap, disposable content on a mass scale, force fed to us by the portals and search engines“. This “fast food content“, he says, is “cheap, crappy” and produced by “masses of sub-par journalists” with “little or no editorial oversight“.

That sentiment is echoed elsewhere. Richard MacManus of ReadWriteWeb declares that “the bottom line is that the quality of content produced by these ‘content farms’ is dubious, which has an impact on both publishers and readers“. And he wants Google to take action, good luck with that.

The arguments made, which one can easily sympathize with, are also slightly ironic. As well-known skeptic Loren Feldman points out in a vlog, many of the blogs bashing Demand Media and its ilk have themselves been called out for producing content of questionable ‘quality‘ and employing loose ‘editorial standards‘. Feldman’s most important point: most prominent blogs are guilty of pandering to Google. The problem? The Demand Medias of the world produce Googlebait on a much larger and more efficient scale than the vast majority of bloggers could ever hope to replicate.

You could debate this subject for hours on end but I’m not sure how worthwhile the mud-slinging is. That’s because there’s nothing inherently wrong with fast food content.

Yes, it’s true that the content produced by companies like Demand Media is not going to win any awards and in some cases, it’s not very good by any honest standard. So what? A Big Mac isn’t the most nutritious meal, but reasonable people are not going to suggest that cities banish McDonald’s restaurants to the side streets so that only the ‘gourmet‘ restaurants can line the main strip.

There is a market for content of all types, just as there’s a market for restaurants of all types. You might scarf down an occasional Big Mac at McDonald’s, but that doesn’t mean you’ll never make reservations at the most expensive restaurant in town. And so it goes with content. If you’re looking for information on how to change the oil in your car, you could probably do far worse than the eHow article on the matter.

A common undercurrent in all of the criticism of content farms is that the content isn’t fit to be published. ReadWriteWeb’s MacManus comes right out and says it: fast-food content “often…lacks knowledge of the topic at hand“. This, in my opinion, is perhaps the most intriguing criticism since many well-known bloggers have no professional training as journalists, and were hardly world-renowned ‘experts‘ in their fields when they started blogging. But that doesn’t mean that they are incapable of producing content that has appeal to consumers. To the contrary, their passion and authenticity gives them the ability and freedom to offer different perspectives, even if they’re not always ‘correct‘.

Frankly, I there’s too much academic discussion of ‘quality‘. I’m the first to agree that quality content is king, and the Demand Media model isn’t something I’d personally want to get involved with. But we’re not talking about user-generated link farms or aggregated junk here. Love it or hate it, we are discussing original content. And there’s no monopoly on who can create it. You don’t need a Ph.D. in Journalism to write an article about changing oil, and there’s nothing scummy about Demand Media’s strategy of cherry-picking subjects with economic value. Monitor what topics people are searching for, evaluate their economic potential, and create original content to meet the demand if it makes money. You can call that ‘content farming‘ and ‘gaming the system‘, but I’d rather call it what it really is: ‘market research‘ and ‘common sense business‘.

Obviously, not everyone wants to consume fast food content, and not every writer is going to be willing to cook up delicious content for nickels and dimes on the word. You’d think that would be obvious. Given the fretting in the blogosphere, however, I would suggest that some of the ‘gourmet chefs‘ who are surprisingly worried about the new McDonald’s down the block may not be so confident in their menus.

“For some sites, there are legitimate reasons to [have] duplicate content across different websites — for instance, to migrate to a new domain name using a web server that cannot create server-side redirects,” says John Mueller, Webmaster Trends Analyst with Google Zürich.

“There are situations where it’s not easily possible to set up redirects,” he says. “This could be the case when you need to move your website from a server that does not feature server-side redirects. In a situation like this, you can use the rel=’canonical’ link element across domains to specify the exact URL of whichever domain is preferred for indexing. While the rel=’canonical’ link element is seen as a hint and not an absolute directive, we do try to follow it where possible.”

Mueller gives the following ways of handling cross-domain content duplication:

- Choose your preferred domain
- Reduce in-site duplication
- Enable crawling and use 301 (permanent) redirects where possible
- Use the cross-domain rel=”canonical” link element

Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable gives three reasons why the addition of cross-domain support for the rel=”canonical” link element is really important:

1. Some hosts don’t allow webmasters to deploy 301 redirects
2. Some site owners aren’t technical enough to implement a 301 redirect
3. In some cases, webmasters do not want to redirect users but rather only search engines (i.e. pagination, weird filtering, tracking parameters added to URLs, etc).

To use the link element, pages don’t have to be identical, but they should be similar. According to Google, slight differences are fine. You should not point point rel=”canonical” to the home page of the preferred site. Google says this can result in problems, and that a mapping from an old URL to a new URL for each URL on the old site is the best way to go.

You should not use a no-index robots meta tag on pages with a rel=”canonical” link element because those pages would not be equivalent with regards to indexing, Google says. One would be allowed while the other would be blocked. Google also says it’s important that these pages aren’t disallowed from crawling through a robots.txt file, because search engine crawlers won’t be able to discover the rel=”canonical” link element.

Demand Media, for instance, was created with this business model. Figure out what people are searching for, create somewhat unique content in bulk that matches the title tags and other keywords in the search terms, place Google ads all over this content and  voila … Demand Media’s eHow.com articles rank on the first page of Google search result for hundreds of thousand of searches. By the way, Demand Media is reportedly going to generate $200 million in revenue this year and may be worth a billion dollars in large part because of these Google Adwords clicks.

It is a fascinating business model; A content assembly line creates content specifically for Google searches and Google then pays millions for Google ads clicked on that content. Unfortunately, it does raise questions about whether Google has a conflict of interest in being both the main supplier of traffic and revenue for these bulk article sites while also earning substantial revenue for itself? After all, if these articles didn’t result high in Google searches this mass content production model wouldn’t work.

I have followed the SEO industry for years and our WebProNews reporters have interviewed countless Google product managers on the subject of ranking well in Google.  Google’s mantra has been for publishers to make quality content for their users and not for its search engine. Google’s position is that quality content will rise to the top of its SERPS.

However, Google seems to be sending content creators a mixed message. Demand Media is creating as many as 5,000 articles and videos each day for the purposes of ranking in Google. If Google’s message is for publishers to create content for their readers, not just to rank in Google, then why is Demand Media’s content ranking so well in Google?

The answer could be that for thousands of long tail searches, Demand Media’s content is quality enough. The vast majority of Google searches on any given day include a search term that will get less than a hundred searches a day. What content farms such as Demand Media do is provide articles and videos that are optimized for these rarely searched terms. The content is often mediocre, but it is unique and it has a title tag and other keywords that match these targeted searches.

The problem as I see it is that while Google is highly ranking the content of these mass production publishers it also has a financial incentive to do so. Almost all content farms use Google Adwords for their revenue. So while Google on the one hand encourages publishers to make content for their readers and not just for search ranking, it is in partnership with sites that do just that.

This should make publishers wonder about their business models. Should they spend thousands paying reporters and editors to create quality content for their users or should they simply create a content farm that pays little for bulk quantities of articles and videos but gets lots of Google love?

I guess if you can make content for the purpose of ranking in searches … but make it targeted, unique and not horrible, then you might find that Google well reward you quite well.
